Alternative music is a broad term that covers a variety of rock subgenres that first emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. The “alternative” label was originally used to describe artists that made the type of music that was outside the mainstream pop and rock of the era.
The emergence of grunge rock heralded a new shift in how rock music was made. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soudgarden and Alice and Chains were making grunge records that were distinct from the rock albums that came before. With a focus on electric guitar distortion, heavy drums and an emphasis on lyrics and song writing, Alternative rock albums came to dominate the rock scene in the late 80s and early 90s.
In addition to grunge, Alternative rock also covers subgenres like indie rock, college rock, emo, new wave, post punk and any form of experimental rock music.
