John Coltrane
John Coltrane is universally viewed as one of the greatest American musicians of all time. A prominent jazz saxophonist in the mid-20th century, Coltrane got his start with music while serving in the Navy at the end of World War II. While stationed in Hawaii, Coltrane became the only black member of his base band. After returning from the Navy with a growing love for music, Coltrane was contacted by legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, who personally asked Coltrane to join his quintet.
